The Soul of Umunyana

My name is Dydine Umunyana Anderson, and Umunyana Coffee is not just a brand—it’s the story of my heritage, my family, and my homeland. I was born in Rwanda, a country known for its breathtaking landscapes, resilient people, and some of the best coffee in the world. My name, “Umunyana,” means “a rare and precious blessing that brings luck.” It was given to me by my grandmother, a strong, loving woman from Rwanda’s northern region—a place where the volcanic soil nurtures not only exceptional coffee but also deep cultural roots. Her spirit and the land she cherished inspire everything I do.

My grandmother, like so many women in Rwanda, embodied strength and resilience, even in the face of unimaginable loss. She gave me my name before she was taken from us during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Her memory lives on in Umunyana Coffee, which I created to celebrate her legacy and honor the incredible women who shape Rwanda’s coffee culture.

Coffee in Rwanda has its own story. Once a symbol of exploitation during colonial times, it has become a symbol of renewal and pride. The northern volcanic highlands, where my grandmother lived, produce some of the best coffee in the world—bright, rich, and full of flavor. Umunyana Coffee brings this extraordinary gift to your cup, grown with care by women-led cooperatives who are reclaiming their power and transforming their communities.

For me, Umunyana Coffee is more than just coffee. It’s a connection to the land that raised me, the grandmother who named me, and the women who inspire me. Every sip carries a story of resilience, heritage, and hope. My dream is that when you enjoy Umunyana Coffee, you’re not just tasting one of the world’s finest coffees—you’re sharing in the journey of empowerment and transformation that began in Rwanda’s rich volcanic soil. Welcome to Umunyana, where every cup brings us closer together.
